Year of growth for Domestic Airlines in India

Posted Date:  March 18, 2011

As per the data released by Ministry of Civil Aviation, scheduled domestic airlines in India carried a total of 520.21 lakh passengers in the year 2010. This was a growth of 18.7% compared to 2009 where in the total passengers carried was 438.40 Lakh.

This is indeed great news and shows a sign of revival and continued growth in this sector. Not surprisingly it is the private carriers who have contributed to this tremendous growth.

Indigo has turned out to be the clear winner and is getting to the top position of being the Airline with the largest market share pushing down the National carriers Air India and Indian Airlines. The combined strength of Jet Airways and Jet Lite continue to be bigger than Indigo and King Fisher but credit should be given to Indigo for coming in from behind and getting the top spot.

The below table gives you a brief idea about the market share of Airlines in 2010.

Airline Market Share in %
Indigo 18.6
King Fisher 18.6
Jet Airways 17.7
