Airlines and airports expect to increase IT spending in 2017

Posted Date:  January 9, 2017

According to SITA’s 2016 India IT Trends Benchmark study, released at the India ICT Aviation Forum 2016, airlines and airports in India are expected to spend on new technology over the next three years to keep up with surging growth which will see passenger traffic double by 2020.

This growth will move India to the third largest in world’s aviation market.

As per the report,92% of Indian travellers are having a smartphone – meanwhile India need to focus on certain areas where we lag behind the global average in case of services including mobile check-in.

“Half of the airlines in India have already implemented check-in via mobile, while three quarters of airlines globally have it in place,” SITA says.

But even though fewer Indian airlines offer mobile check-in, the “conversion” is higher – 14% of Indian travellers used mobile check-in against an average of 12%.

OTAs, airline dotcoms and metas with a presence in India will take heart from the fact that 27% of Indians booked their last flight via an app compared with a global average of 16%.

India still couldn’t achieve few emerging trends such as the Internet of Things (IoT). Globally airlines are bringing aircraft into the Internet of Things (IoT) ecosystem with an increasing number of “connected aircraft” starting to enter the global fleet, so that passengers can get online at 30,000 feet. The survey shows no airlines in India are yet operating connected aircraft. However, the airlines recognize the potential for enhancing passenger services by 2019.
