The Rising Domestic Airlines scenario in India

Posted Date:  August 18, 2010

The DGCA (Directorate General of Civil Aviation) has released its data for the period for January to May 2010 and the Indian Domestic Airline segment has recorded close to 22 % growth when compared to the same period last year. In total Indian domestic airlines carried 211 lakh passengers compared to 173 Lakh passengers last year. Keep in mind that the Indian domestic sector was growing at almost 25% YoY before the great recession set in. This means that we are climbing back slowly and steadily and could be a trailer to better figures in the coming months and years.

If we are to look at the individual percentage of load carried by each airline then we get an interesting picture. (picture courtesy – TravTalk July edition)

Jet Airways (with Jet lite) is the leader with close to 26% of market share, followed by Kingfisher at 21%. (with Kingfisher Red) NACIL  represents the national carriers Air India and Indian Airlines.

There was also considerable increase in seat factor for all the airlines with Jet Airways having 82.5% compared to 74% last year April, Kingfisher having 83.2% from 75.8%, Air India having 77.8 compared to 73% and Go Air having 86% compared to 78% (all for month of April)
